Lois Lerner, the director of the exempt organizations unit at the Internal Revenue Service, plans to invoke the Fifth Amendment during her expected testimony before the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee on Wednesday, the Los Angeles Times reports. Lerner announced her plans to plead the Fifth during her testimony in a letter from her lawyer, William Taylor III, to the committee. "She has not committed any crime or made any misrepresentation but under the circumstances she has no choice but to take this course," the letter addressed to Chairman Darrell Issa (R-Calif.) reads, according to the Los Angeles Times. Since she will be pleading the Fifth, Taylor has asked the committee that she be excused from testifying. The letter from Taylor states that her testimony would "have no purpose other than to embarrass or burden her." The Wednesday hearing would have been Lerner's first public appearance, and first under oath, since she apologized for the IRS' inappropriate targeting of conservative groups at a May 10 American Bar Association meeting. That apology was planned ahead of time by the IRS, and came in response to a planted question. www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/05/21/lois-lerner-irs-scandal_n_3314693.html

Everyone just needs to leave this woman alone. The only crime she committed was not being good at math.

Q: Okay. Now, was there a point around this time period when [your supervisor] asked you to do a search for similar applications? A: Yes. Q: To the best of your recollection, when was this request made? A: Sometime in early March of 2010. ****** Q: Did [your supervisor] give you any indication of the need for the search, any more context? A: He told me that Washington, D.C., wanted some cases. ****** Q: So as of April 2010, these 40 cases were held at that moment in your group; is that right? A: Some were. Q: How many were held there? A: Less than 40. Some went to Washington, D.C. Q: Okay. How many went to Washington, D.C.? A: I sent seven. ****** Q: So you prepared seven hard copy versions of the applications to go to Washington, D.C.? A: Correct. ****** Q: Did he give you any sort of indication as to why he requested you to do that? […] A: He said Washington, D.C. wanted seven. Because at one point I believe I heard they were thinking 10, but it came down to seven. I said okay, seven. www.wsbradio.com/weblogs/jamie-dupree/2013/jun/02/congress-back-work-focus-irs/

NONE of the new tax-exempt groups who filed were turned down. Even though there is strong evidence that groups on both sides of the political spectrum gave generously to political candidates while totally denying this.
Out of curiosity, does anyone know the number of groups who applied for tax-exempt status had the name Tea Party or one of it's derivatives in their name?
How about this... How many new groups applied for tax-exempt status since GWB left office? Apparently there was quite a hi number. And do you really think we have enough people in the IRS to thoroughly investigate all of them? Remember, govt employees, including IRS, laid off many.

Unite In Action out of Florida has been delayed for two years and they are STILL waiting. That is a de facto denial. WASHINGTON – A Washington advocacy group filed a lawsuit on Wednesday against the IRS and top Obama administration officials on behalf of 25 Tea Party-related groups, marking the biggest lawsuit to date over the tax agency's practice of targeting conservatives for additional scrutiny.
The 29-page lawsuit named Attorney General Eric Holder, Treasury Secretary Jack Lew and several IRS officials -- including Lois Lerner, the division director who refused to testify before Congress last week. The suit claims the constitutional rights of 25 Tea Party and other conservative groups were violated when tax workers singled them out for a drawn-out vetting process.
